Edward visits Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum

We travelled from San Sebastián to Bilbao,  the capital city of Basque Country, which can be found on the northern central coast of Spain, some 14 kms inland from the Bay of Biscay´s Atlantic coast.

Sadly for us it was a grey and drizzly day, but it didn´t stop us exploring the streets of the old city, taking a relaxing trip on the EuskoTran and spending the afternoon in the amazing Guggenheim Museum.

The Museum is located alongside the Nervión River in downtown Bilbao, and is a glass and titanium structure filled with modern and contemporary art.  Sited as it is in a port town, the Guggenheim museum is intended to resemble a ship.

There´s no doubt that the exhibits struggle at times to compete with the huge sculpture housing them.   And that’s quite something, when you consider that the museum has displayed the works of some of the greatest artists of all time – from Picasso and Van Gogh to Matisse, Degas and Monet.

The exhibits continue outside of the building too,  with an enormous spider sculpture (which you can see in the photo behind Edward) and the famous giant puppy monument, fashioned out of bedding plants renewed each spring, being sure to grab your attention.

This was somewhere Edward and I have been looking forward to visiting – and we weren´t disappointed!
